Chalazion is an inflammation that appears on the eyelid due to the conglomeration of greasy cells inside the upper eyelid. Chalazion is not a serious condition and it does not really have to cause you any serious preoccupation. This disease usually disappears from itself, thus not requiring any special treatment. But there are cases nonetheless in which the inflamed gland is large and it can get really ugly. In this case, you should definitely see a doctor.
When the infection is not too serious, then you can take care of yourself at home. What you should use is a warm compress or a wet towel. Put it on your eyelid for more or less fifteen minutes, a few times a day. This method will surely reduce the swollen eyelid. Another thing that you can do is to massage your eyelid several times a day by forcing yourself not to scratch the chalazion.
If the condition is more serious then you must see a doctor. He/she will prescribe you antibiotic drops or ointments if the inflammation seems to be of a more serious concern. In the cases in which the chalazion is large, then the doctor will inject your eyelid with a steroid medicine that will surely decrease the inflammation. The lump can also be removed by using the surgical method if the lump persists for weeks. If the chalazion lasts for weeks or if it keeps coming back, then the ophthalmologist will determine whether the lump should be eliminated through surgery or not.
In the treatment of the chalazion the first thing that you should do is to apply warm compresses on the eyelid for at least four times a day. This method will probably soften the oil blockings and the drainage will appear, thus causing, implicitly, the curing.
If the chalazion is in an acute stage, then there will be required the use of antibiotic eye drops and ointments that will consistently reduce the lump. But this treatment is more efficient when it is used at the beginnings, when the inflammation appeared or when the first symptoms were noticed.
If the lumps are too large or if they do not disappear in a few weeks, then what you should do is to consult a doctor that will choose the removal of the lump by using a surgical intervention. You will feel no pain because this procedure will be done under local anesthesia. This intervention will be performed from under the eyelid and, this way, there will remain no scars on the surface of the skin.
All in all, what I was trying to pinpoint is that the chalazions are not at all complicated or serious lumps, but the larger they get and the longer they persist, the more treatment they need. You can use different treatments from simple warm compressions to combinations of antibiotic or steroid drops or injections. In some more complicated situations, it is recommended to intervene surgically in order to produce the drainage of the gland in which the oil was blocked. While in most cases the chalazion disappears after the required care was applied, there are situations in which the cures based on traditional methods or on antibiotics do not work. This is an extreme case that requires a surgical intervention. The procedure is not painful and it is not at all complicated. But if the infection reappears the doctor might suggest you to have a biopsy taken in order to determine whether the problem is not more serious than it was suspected.
The treatment of chalazion is established in accordance with the age of the patient, the seriousness of the condition, and, in some cases, you can choose the type of treatment that you will use.
