The efficiency of the treatment of the Chagas disease is especially experienced in the acute phase of the disease when the organs and the systems in the body are not too damaged. If the disease is more advanced then the medication is not as effective. In the last stage of the evolution of this stage, namely the chronic level, the medical cure is mainly based on the reduction of the pain that the symptoms cause. This disease causes death in all cases, but the life expectancy can be very high as long as the immune system is solid and if the patient takes good care of himself/herself. There hasn’t been discovered a vaccine or a drug that can save somebody from the Chagas disease.
The medical treatment for this disease has benefic results only if it applied at the beginning of this illness, when the first signs of the infection are being noticed. The drugs in this case are based on azole or nitroderivatives, but, unfortunately these elements that are to be found in the composition of the drugs administrated to the patients are very toxic for the body. These medicines are nonetheless offered by the doctors who have to be very careful to the quantities they prescribe because these drugs have many negative effects. Another drug that has been used for some time was an antifungal drug but it was expensive and its degree of toxicity was too high for a long-term administration to the patients.
In the final stage of this disease, that is the chronic level, the concern of the doctors when they think of treatment for Chagas disease is to reduce the clinical symptoms of the disease, that is to offer the patients drugs that can at least maintain in a good shape the heart muscle or the digestive system. But at this stage of the disease, there are not too many things that can be done.
There has been nonetheless developed a vaccine that has fairly reasonable results. This vaccine has been created on the basis cellular and sub cellular portions taken from the parasite, but, as it happened in other cases, the patients could not afford to pay the money. The investment that was needed for the buying of this drug was too high. Apparently, there are being made researches on the drugs that could at least help at the prevention of the transmitting of this disease. A final result was not found but the scientists are hoping to find a cure as soon as possible.
Because there are no vaccines or medicines that can prevent the Chagas disease, and if you happen to visit an area where you are at high risk, there are some things that you should take into consideration. First, avoid sleeping in places that are constructed out of mud, or in adobe houses, and then use insecticides that kill all insects and bugs.
In the acute stage of development of the Chagas disease, there are some drugs that might work in the treating of the symptoms. There are the nitruforan derivatives that act against intracellular amastigotes, but this drug causes oxidative stress which reduces its efficacy. The nitroimidazole derivatives are used for the same purpose, but they are not too effective either. All the drugs that have these bases have not proven to offer positive results in all cases. Furthermore, the treatment has completely failed in the cases in which the patient’s immune system was too weak to resist the high level of substances. The treatment, even if its not one hundred percent effective, should be applied as soon as possible, namely as soon as the first symptoms appear.
