Appendicitis is known to be the inflammation of the appendix and it requires surgery so that the appendix would be removed before bursting or perforating and causing other problems. Appendicitis may be caused by infections, as the role of the appendix is considered to be the response to threat for the body. The symptoms of appendicitis are easy to recognize and the treatment is considered to be the simplest, but, at the same time, the most difficult one.
The common symptoms of appendicitis are the following: abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, fever and loss of appetite. The first sign of appendicitis is the sharp pain near the navel, in the right part of the abdomen. There are also other symptoms that may appear and may show the development of appendicitis: pain in the lower or upper abdomen and even in back or rectum, pain during urination, either constipation or diarrhea. Some severe cramps may also occur so that the patient is not able to support such pain and has to go to the hospital. Although using some remedies may be very tempting, especially when the pain is unbearable, the idea is to call the doctor and wait until the specialist will decide what is best in this case after consulting and reaching to a correct diagnosis. Eating or drinking is not recommended and neither are other popular remedies, as they may cause the inflammation and eventually the burst of the appendix, causing other painful consequences.
Taking into account the fact that the symptoms of appendicitis are common with other affections and are not so prominent and sharp, the urgent consultation of the doctor is highly recommended, as the sooner the appendix is removed, the better. The symptoms resemble the ones for other problems: gastritis, ovary problems, intestinal infection or infections of the urinary tract. That is why only a doctor may tell for sure what the right diagnosis is with the help of an abdominal and rectal exam, blood test and urine test. These are extremely relevant for the right diagnosis and treatment.
The common treatment for appendicitis is the surgery during which the appendix is removed so that other consequences may be prevented and stopped in due time. This surgery is called appendectomy and it may also require an abscess drain if it was formed. Peritonitis may also occur in cases of appendicitis and therefore antibiotics are given in order to prevent its development. The appendix may be removed by surgical therapy or with the help of laparoscopy. The advantage of using the laparoscope is that the incision is not so big and the patient may return to his daily activities faster than in the case of a classic surgery. Nevertheless, in 2 or 3 weeks the patient may begin his usual activities.
Some complications may appear in the case some symptoms bother the patient. The doctor should be called immediately and decide about the future actions. These symptoms that may appear after the surgical intervention or laparoscopy are: fever, vomiting, blood in the urine or vomit, abdominal pain, dizziness and general weakness. It is important to follow a proper treatment and to recover quickly.
Although it may seem an insignificant illness, appendicitis may be the cause of death if it is not discovered and treated quickly. There are still cases of death during the removal of the appendix and this may also be due to the fact that the appendicitis was discovered a little bit late. That is why if the mentioned symptoms are vaguely similar the doctor should be contacted as soon as possible, as not only the health, but also the life may depend on several days or hours.
