Chalazion refers to that lump that it is found in the eyelid, a lump that is caused by the inflammation of a gland inside the skin. This lump usually has a gradual development and it is wither red, warm, and it might also cause pain. The gland that becomes inflamed is a modified sweat gland that produces oil. The chalazion appears the moment that gland is blocked. This inflammation of the gland is a reaction of the body against a specific condition, reaction that can cause the appearance of redness, swelling, warmth or pain at the level of the organ that was affected.
The chalazion appears when the oil in the gland from the eyelid becomes too thick in consistency and therefore when it cannot flow out of the gland, thus stopping the gland from producing more oil. The only chance for the oil is to build itself inside the gland thus causing the formation of the lump.
A chalazion is to be recognized by some visible signs. The upper eyelid is swollen but this condition can appear only after several weeks. There are cases in which the limp appears on the lower eyelid, but these situations are very rare. The chalazion has a hard, tough texture and it might reach considerable dimensions, namely an eighth of an inch, which is quite considerable. You can recognize this condition if you feel pain in the eyelid, or when the eyelid begins to swell or to become reddish.
The most frequent signs and symptoms of the infection of the eyelid are the raised bump on the eyelid, be it the upper one or the lower one, and the red color of the lump. Usually, this infection is associated with soreness and pain. If you experience all these symptoms but you cannot be really sure if the condition that you have is chalazia or not then the best thing to do is to pay a visit to the doctor’s office. In less than a minute, he will tell you what your condition is only by simply having a look at your eyelid.
Those who have chalazion will present more than one hard, focal lumps in the upper eyelid or in the lower eyelid. If the lump is not treated, it will become larger and the lid will hurt. Before the appearance of the chalazion, you might even experience pain in the lid, but this does not happen all the time. And once you treated the chalazion, it does not mean that the infection cannot appear again in time. This recurrence of the lump is usually favored by a poor hygiene at the level of the eyes.
The painful swelling of the upper eyelid, the eyelid tenderness and sensitivity, your eyes’ sensitivity when you look at light, and the excessive tearing, these are the main signs and symptoms that signal the presence of chalazion.
There are cases in which the chalazion is very small, imperceptible, and its symptoms are barely visible. In this case, the treatment is not required because the inflammation will disappear shortly. If the dimension of the chalazion is large, then this will cause you some problems in seeing because it disables you from keeping your eyelid completely open. In the area where the lump appears there is lots of tenderness which will cause some discomfort especially since your vision will be blurred. The symptoms of the chalazion involve more than red and swollen eyelid. You might as well experience itchy eyelid, or an eyelid cyst or irritation. The chalazion is of no great concern and it appears over a longer period of time, days or even weeks.
